  • 1990 U.S. Hang Gliding National Championships - My Backup Glider (Z1) at Cliff Ridge Launch - I crashed my primary glider (also a Z1) landing in a thunderstorm the day before (broke the leading edge and both downtubes) and that night I traded my Wills Wing HP II to another competitor for his backup glider. HP's were easier to sell, and Z1's are easier to fly so we were both happy with the deal. That's not me, that's our team's trusty driver who could find a needle in 18 haystacks packed back-to-back. That's a handy skill to have when you're chasing confused pilots over half the states of Utah and Colorado.

  • 1990 U.S. Hang Gliding National Championships - The town of Dinosaur, CO, which was a turnpoint on one of the days, and a tornado blew though the town just as we were on our way to the turnpoint. I'd never seen a tornado before. Glad I was in the air a safe distance away and not down on the ground where it was whipping through.
