  • 1990 U.S. Hang Gliding National Championships - At cloud base at around 17,999 feet not far from Cliff Ridge launch
  • 1990 U.S. Hang Gliding National Championships. You can see a competitor down below me diving to escape the cloud suck. I was too young and stupid back then to have enough sense to do the same thing.

  • 1990 U.S. Hang Gliding National Championships - Near cloud base and getting ready to dive through the virga under a big thundercloud.

  • 1990 U.S. Hang Gliding National Championships - 17,999 feet and still climbing. FAA regulations say we aren't supposed to climb above 17,999 feet? FAA? What's that?!? ;-)
  • 1990 U.S. Hang Gliding National Championships - Dinosaur National Monument is down there somewhere, I'm near cloud base, probably at around 17,000'

  • 1990 U.S. Hang Gliding National Championships - Russ Locke, USHGA President just outside of Maybell, CO. We landed in the same field here on the practice day.
  • 1990 U.S. Hang Gliding National Championships - My 2nd Z1 setup near our camp in Dinosaur, CO
  • 1990 U.S. Hang Gliding National Championships - Landed at this wide spot in an otherwise narrow canyon on one of the days.

  • 1990 U.S. Hang Gliding National Championships - Hungry Joe (right) and another teammate (left) after Hungry Joe outran a gust front coming down out of the mountains on final glide to goal. He landed just moments before the front edge of the front. His glider is layed down flat due to the strong winds from the gust front.
  • Owens Valley - Aerial shot from north end of the White Mountains, near CA/NV border, looking south. I've flown to this spot from a launch (Gunter) that is beyond the far end of the mountains that you can see. I'm probably at around 15,000' and Montgomery Peak (13,441 feet) is in the foreground. The highest point in Nevada, Boundary Peak, is just off the left edge of the photo. The temperature at this altitude was around 10 degrees F. <br />

Note that Geoff Loyns died near here in a sailplane crash. He was alone and noone knows what caused the crash.
